Search engine optimization – the book for Web developers

In the now already 3. Edition there is a standard work for search engine optimization from Galileo press home.

I had the work by Sebastian Erlhofer in Edition 2 and even then it I liked.

We take a look at the book times. Is it on the current state of affairs and what is it for self-employed persons in the network?

For beginner or advanced

The subtitle of the book is “Basics, functional modes and ranking optimization”. And these 3 words describe the content of the book very well.

The book is aimed at beginners in the matter. There are the basics of the Web and specifically dealt with the search engines.

It will work also explains how search engines. An interesting section that, how the Web and search the Web actually works, significantly increases understanding.

The bulk of the book but is the actual search engine optimization of websites and blogs.

The content

The book contains 14 main sections plus Annex:

1. Search the Web
2. Anatomy of the World Wide Web
3. Architecture of search engines
4. Weight and relevance
5. Search process
6. Keyword research
7. On-page optimization
8. Off-page optimization
9. Spam
10. Inclusion in search engines
11. Monitoring and controlling
12. Google – rumors, theories, and facts
13. Usability and search engine optimization
14. Optimization specifically: TYPO3 and Word-press

It is really interesting certainly first in Chapter 6. Keyword research is indeed a very important and there are many ways to find the right keywords.

Erlhofer is now again on the basics and explains why the keywords have great importance. Then there are many tips on how you can find the right keywords.

Then the author is a on-page-and Off-page optimization. So what should you do on the Web site and what can you optimize outside the website.

Certainly there are tips that question some professionals, but in the sum improve referred to bring already very much.

Here the author addresses for the first time on the topic of Web 2.0 and shows how these technologies and services help but also curb can (and how to handle these problems).

In the area of spam are things we should be better. Keyword stuffing, hidden links, etc. harm rather than that they help.

Speculation about Google are interesting if there for the professional nothing new is.

Finally, again on the important issue of “Usability” entered into and performed search engine optimization to two concrete examples.

On one of the known CMS Typo3 and Word-press. It is really just the basics. There is much more feasible.

There is still a good glossary which explains many technical terms at the end.

Pro and contra

Unfortunately it is a known issue it in this book.

Books need always a while before you get in print and in trade and in the area of search engine optimization much in a short time changes.

And as there is for example presented online tool “Overture” already no longer.
Because the author is received mainly on the basics and the foundations (which not to change rapidly), a great deal about is in the book.

The konreten examples are somewhat disappointing. The foreword focuses on practical distance. And that certainly also partially applies to the text, but the examples are simply too short and superficial.

Because I wanted less theory and for more practical examples.

Is it to recommend?

All in all is good and well to recommend the book.
Newcomers to the topic “search engine optimization” received a very good basic knowledge and can reach out building very much. Unfortunately, this important essentials is missing some tip hunters.

For professionals, the book, however, is nothing because it contains no new information and no insider tips.
