Interview with Peter Norvig

Peter Norvig, seems today’s Director of Research Department Google allegedly by distance learning an interview for Technology Review (TR) gave these days. We have translated the interview once some passages very interesting for you in German:

Technology Review: Google many innovative products, but the type and manner which has Google search has changed little over the last 10 years. Why?

Peter Norvig: We have search with the Google what the user would like to. And we were not the first remember to excite and the search engines before. You have an input field and a list of 10 results, some brief information about get ready. This simplicity is our success.

TR: what has over the years generally changed?

PN: The extent there are probably a thousand times more information such as our beginnings. At the time the WWW consisted almost exclusively of Web pages, today there are videos, pictures, blogs and many other types of media and formats. Our user has changed the expectation. As I started we have updated the index only once in a month. We thought a long-term thing was rather to a type library. Now we understand our search rather than snapshot. Our users want to can get news already after a few minutes rather than days or weeks.

TR: you say quality of search results from Google is very good. Where to take this knowledge and what do you make the results even better?

PN: We test it in many forms. On one, we track click what seekers. If you click position 1 on the website and not continue to discover this probably means that they have found what they wanted. If our users down scroll, proceed or formulate new search results match their expectations. In addition we involved people who we evaluate the results for defined searches. There are various companies we hire. We train them so that you can tell Spamming and other poor results. Then we leave these results as a ‘ quality ´ with our assessment into, which is of course to everyone possible. We also perform experiments, such as users watch us or home, analyze how and what they just search.

TR: such as ask and power set the search always language is oriented and people in the future more search whole sentences than with just a few keywords prophesy. How is to Google it?

PN: it is us to work every single Word provides exactly the results that the user wishes first of all important. We don’t really believe that it is a major step forward to enter a phrase into a search engine. If you for example, the question ‘ what is the capital of France? ´ type will contain no better results as the type ‘ capital France ´. It is much more important to be able to assign individual terms correctly. ‘ New York is ´ as unlike ‘ York ´, ‘ Vegas ´ but essentially the same as ‘ Las Vegas ´ and ‘ Jersey can ´, must but be the same as ‘ NJ. ´ This is the focus of our work. We work focused on the correct mapping terms or phrases, not the whole phrases. We believe, it is important primarily to improve, not the input methods… the quality of the results

TR: to what extent the personalized search will prevail?

PN:As they try on different ways to integrate. A good example is the mapping of location-specific messages. Here the mapping works very well. Also save individual users find and compare them. We are on the right track, to transfer the personalized search to the entire Web is not easily…

TR: where you can see the Google search in 2 to 5 years?

PN: Man can find everywhere in the world at any time for many different content. We are of course further language-based innovations or links to the mobile phone. We want to do too much work our users as possible. He no longer must decide whether he would like to search for texts, pictures or videos as now. That is why we are working now organize the wide variety of media and select… our users needs
