Author be market + technology and Addison Wesley – interview

Boris Karnikowski is Editor open source Mac OS X & IBM Software press the Pearson Education Corporation. These are boys and girls with publishers “Market + technology” and “Addison Wesley”.

This interview is once again the subject of books to write and publish. The answers are very interesting and show is wonderful as the procedure in a Publisher.

The previous interviews with book and eBook authors:

(1) Provide for your publishing please.

There are actually two publishing signs – imprints, as we say – Addison-Wesley, and market + technology under the umbrella of Pearson Education, one of the three leading teaching and school buchverlage.

Addison-Wesley books for IT professionals (and those who want to be)”, market + technology is user-oriented and releases”Books and software for computers and man”(so two publishing claims).

Pearson Education Germany is the largest German-speaking computer book publisher.

(2) Go to potential authors or should contact you this?

Both and. I am convinced of a topic, find an appropriate author on the Internet at trade shows and conferences, etc.

Often apply to authors with us and suggest topics or specific books. Sometimes when you have good luck, both meets – has a promising topic and the appropriate author reports shortly thereafter.

You have more luck when an author with a topic calls itself was not in view, then later but glossy developed.

(3) What should prospective authors “bring”? Idea, table of contents, first texts?

An idea and a table of contents, references any trainer or instructor activities, a URL on your own blog o.A..

Because if you can give other course knowledge and/or writes like comes with already important prerequisites to computer book author.

(4) How interesting are Fachblogger and look around in this scene?

Very interesting, I look at my many blogs. For me, blogs are the ideal communication platform for Expertentum.

We operate even two blogs with increasing proportion of “Expert contributions”:
DOMAIN.COM and DOMAIN.COM.

As said: someone has something to say / write and the style fits two important Kritieren can be for me two important Kritieren to raise it. He works then, of course, just as a technical expert for us:).

(5) What is the market in terms of IT books? What can you earn as a writer?

Since the large IT hype middle/end of the 1990s, the market is shrunk very much, I would call it today still not small. There are about 16 computer buchverlage in Germany with an estimated annual output between 200 and just under 20 books and it will stay a while.

What (and how) authors earn, varies from Publisher to Publisher – some a few publishers work with fixed honoraren (low). Most publishers involved success of a book their authors on a percentage of sales.

(6) Which marketing tasks can and should take the author?

First we heard of course the right marketing of a book your own marketing Department promotes our titles in print and online in detail – Yes to a Publisher’s main tasks.

An author who is well networked in its community can, however, still support this work. This can be rich holding talks at conferences up to set up your own website or blog which only rotate the current book.

This type of marketing has become more important in recent years.

(7) How long has an author to write a book and how he does in this time the Publisher?

Long writing a book to agreed with contract between Publisher and author. Because most of our authors write not but this period is mostly between a quarter until a full year (which, until the book can appear again round two months join set & print).

The author is supported at this time by working closely with the Publisher, i.e. works with the lecturer to the overall concept, receives substantive feedback from the technical expert assigned by the Publisher and receives formal support by satztechnisches feedback from our production department.

Content and formal barriers should be eliminated as soon as possible.

8) How long does it by the initial idea to the published book?

Not every idea is immediately marketable – at least not as a book – and you must implement some idea very quickly because it is open for other publishers obvious.

That is, sometimes you might wait a few years until we regard a book about a particular subject, sometimes everything is within a few weeks.

The classical period by a 450 pages book is at approximately four to six months, but that is actually much depending on topic, author, and urgency of the project.

(9) Which paper topics are because currently particularly sought after and what ideas must we not come with currently you?

Digital photography, graphic design, content management systems, Windows XP:).

In principle, we are always interested in all possible issues and want to prevent anyone tell us his proposals.

(10) Have a good tip for those who would like to write a book?

Never in the quiet spectacle over weeks or months a manuscript finished writing and then submit. Publishers do difficult is usually in its programme to integrate such manuscripts because by the author it is was not set what readers should be addressed here really, how the competitiveness looks etc.

Also think and often publish publishers in series, requiring which specific speeches, etc.
It is best address a computer Publisher if you have a good idea and even a first outline (chapter just a few titles, so the Lektor/in can see where going).

And then come to the book project: realistic number. Never too optimistic plan. Hardly one / r a 450 pages book writes job and family.

Thank you for the interesting answers
